Alison Bernal

Alison Bernal’s work is concerned with the formal elements of shape and form using architectural source material.

She uses a number of techniques to explore the tension between the two-dimensional form of printmaking and her three-dimensional imagery. This line of inquiry began with an investigation of Piranesi’s Carceri prints and developed to use the architectural elements of modern buildings.

The suite of Open/Close photopolymer prints employs emboss and collage to blur the lines between the print surface and the perceived image. This small scale focuses the eye on the subtle changes of tone and surface.

She trained at Middlesex University and Goldsmiths’ College and continued her studies in printmaking at Morley College.
