Anne Barrell
Anne is interested in how we look at the world and in how we bestow meaning on objects. There is a history to the medium of ceramics which is linked to our industrial heritage and to our domestic lives. There is an element of the souvenir to her work, not just of a place, but of a time.
Anne is very inspired by all things to do with the sea and shipping and our British maritime heritage, as well as by modern British artists. The decoration technique of sgraffito is used with the image scratched into layers of colour on the clay.
There is a definite Alfred Wallis feel to the sgraffito pieces with merchant ships, sailing boats, fishing trawlers and all things to do with the sea and coast featured. Rum cups, pedestal bowls, and jugs have hand painted boats and ships traversing stormy seas or sheltering in tree lined harbours. As each piece is handmade and painted they all have their own character.
The more abstract ‘Shell Range’ are made using slabbed clay decorated with soft grey glazes. They are completed with a final firing with Gold Lustre. These have a sculptural quality and work well in groups
