Next up: colour!

We can’t wait to hear the dawn chorus again! Our glass artist Eddy Crick finds that the most rewarding subjects are inspired by nature. Eddy pushes the technique close to its limits in the endeavor for accuracy. British wild birds are his forte, most of the sun catchers he produce are almost life size, but all are to scale and as accurate as he can achieve.

Until it gets a little bit warmer we’ve got you covered if you’re after some warmth and cosiness. Browse our handmade textiles here.

Discover our new ceramics

Thank you for a wonderful start to our exhibition of prints by Iona Howard and Chrissy Norman. Now it’s time to explore our new ceramics.

Collections

Karen Banks is a ceramic artist who expresses her love of the natural world by producing handbuilt pieces with an organic quality, marked by the elemental forces of fire and smoke.

Jacqui Ramrayka: “As well as natural and urban landscapes, I find inspiration in the seemingly random and mundane, found objects that suggest a fragment of a story.”

Kerry Hastings is a Scottish artist living in London. She often returns to the west of Scotland and finds the dramatic and ancient scenery a great influence.

Moyra Stewart likes to use elements of the natural world as a metaphor for the growth and change in our lives.

Jane Cairns works in response to her surroundings, the ordinary and every day of urban life, where she finds an accidental poetry that is often overlooked.

Charlotte Jones makes her distinctive pots by adding colour to white stoneware clay, local clays, grog from streams and oxides.

Sue Mundy: “Nature is a major source of inspiration to me. I combine the gentleness of undulating landscapes, the turmoil of the sea and the soft sensuality of the human form into my work.”

We do not usually push for early Christmas shopping however this year many small businesses find themselves in a very different situation to previous years. Please support us and other independents and purchase your gifts early. Staggering Christmas shopping will help businesses with limited staff and space to make the most of a very uncertain run up to Christmas. Thank you for your continued support!

Autumn in the gallery

We are very pleased to invite you to our online preview of exhibition of paintings by Lesley Seeger, Sally Anne Fitter and ceramics by Shirley Vauvelle.

Please click here to access the show.

Lesley Seeger was born in Newcastle Upon Tyne in 1958 and spent her formative years in rural Northumberland, Scotland and North Yorkshire. Inspired by the natural world she works en plein air and completes work in the studio. Working on up to seven paintings at a time, each body of work includes both landscapes and semi abstract florals whose styles and methods inform and compliment each other. She is to be found, most of the time in the middle of a field with a wheelbarrow full of paints and canvases.

Sally Anne Fitter lives and works on the North Norfolk coast and is a painter specialising in Still life. Her past as a textile designer is evident in her use of pattern and colour and she often incorporates elements of gold leaf and collage into her paintings. A technique of layering and scraping away paint is used to create textured, vibrant paintings which inspire happiness, and her imaginative eye for colour and composition create contemporary artworks which are extremely sought after.

Shirley Vauvelle is an established decorative mixed media British maker, her practice has tended to produce playful component pieces combined with found materials. Assemblages are inspired by creatures, birds and plants. Shirley's art education background and initial design career was in textile/surface decoration. Self taught in ceramics, recently her work has become more abstract and larger in scale and concentrates on form and balance of space as a whole.

Thank you to all our customers for adhering to our new rules and accepting that this is our new reality for a little while. The footfall in Cambridge is still 53% down on last year. With so many shops closing around us, we are fearing second wave and how it's going to affect our Christmas trade.

Visiting Katharina Klug's studio

cambridge contemporary artComment

Our photographer Zuza Grubecka visited Katharina Klug’s Cambridge pottery studio last year. Still pregnant at the time, Katharina worked day and night on developing her porcelain pieces - mainly sets of cylinders and bottles. Katharina and Zuza work together regularly and they document Katharina’s work from very early stages to the last firing.

It’s extremely satisfying to see how the chalky whites and pastel pinks turn into Katharina’s signature vibrant monochrome pieces with a hint of red. Below you can listen to Katharina’s interview where she talks about her work, inspirations and life in Cambridge.

You can purchase Katharina’s pieces directly from our website! See the selection of pieces below.

Our Ceramic Show ends on 11th July.

We are reopening!

Monday 15 June

It thrills us to announce that from Monday 15th June we will be able to welcome you in the gallery again.

Monday - Saturday 9am-5.30pm and Sundays 11am-5pm

There’s no denying the last few months have been very difficult for us at cambridge contemporary art and cambridge contemporary crafts.

Like so many other small businesses cambridge contemporary art has fallen through the cracks with regards to government grants and with 6 members of staff still furloughed we have only  been able to survive thanks to the amazing support from our loyal customers.

We have been working very hard behind the scenes to keep the business going, opening a brand new online shop in just three weeks. Our much anticipated Ceramic Show had to move online as well.

For those who cannot visit us in Cambridge, we plan to continue expanding our online output. We have already welcomed so many new followers on Instagram and Facebook.

The coming months on the high street will be very tricky and we know it is the continued support of our customers and community that will help us to keep going.

On behalf of everybody at cambridge contemporary art and all the artists who we represent - THANK YOU!

We would like to reassure you that we have put in place new health and safety measures for the protection of staff and customers. These measures include limiting the number of people in the gallery, increased cleaning and hand sanitiser being available at the entrance.

Visiting Jane Hollidge's studio

cambridge contemporary art1 Comment
25.03.1982.jpg

Last summer, when the ideas of a global pandemic and social isolation were only a thing from films and science fiction books, our photographer Zuza visited ceramicist Jane Hollidge in her stunning modern house just outside of Cambridge.

As Strutt&Parker, a Cambridge based letting and selling agency, describes: ‘Barrington is the quintessential English village with, reputedly, the biggest village green in the country. The high street runs through the middle of the green and is flanked by a wealth of delightful period homes and cottages. Ivy Haus is a truly stunning bespoke modern house designed by Jane and her husband Peter, and built by the acclaimed German company, Huf Haus.

Jane and Peter worked closely with Peter Huf to create a beautiful home of exceptional quality, light and space which has been featured in several property magazines. Full of glass and exposed structural timbers the concept behind the property was to maximise the outlook across the garden, river and neighbouring fields and bring the occupier closer to nature. The attention to detail and superb finish is evident throughout with an emphasis on energy-efficiency.’
