Fiona Millais

“I take inspiration from the places and objects that I love. I walk outside every day, and often gather additional materials, so that stones, leaves and feathers become visual reminders of my experience.

I love the connection between the natural rhythms of the land and how it reflects our presence or the lack of it. The way that landscapes are shaped by ourselves and our ancestors, leaving marks and echoes through time.

I usually work on several pieces at the same time which allows me to explore ideas in a series of paintings. My canvasses are often painted and repainted so that traces of the original images remain present, creating layers of marks, colour and interwoven history.

I studied Fine Art at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, graduating in 1984. My great-grandfather was the Pre-Raphaelite painter, Sir John Everett Millais.”
