Frances Ives

Frances Ives is an artist and illustrator, originally from North Lincolnshire and now based in Cambridge. She moved to Cambridge after a decade in London to study for her Master in Children’s Book Illustration, and fell in love with the city and surrounding areas.

Frances works in a variety of media, including (but never limited to) water based paints, soft pastels and pencils, as well as fine art printmaking processes. She often combines different approaches to enable her to capture the atmosphere, emotion and feeling of a space or piece of work.

Frances’ work is largely inspired by work she makes in her sketchbooks, which are a place to play and experiment. They have become a space for her to observe her world, and after spending extensive time amongst the fields and trees during 2020, these pages cemented her love of nature and the importance of her environment. You can see these influences across much of her work. Light and darkness, field edges and tree lines, and expansive skies are subjects she will always return to.
