Jess Florence

Having grown up alongside the New Forest's Coastal Path, Jess Florence takes inspiration from microscopic forms occurring within nature; in particular the vast variety of Sea Coral from the Anthozoa group.

Using a variety of tools and methods, she replicates these unique textures onto the surface of her clay forms. From press moulding the body of a flask to throwing delicate elements off the hump, the final stage is carefully applying her intricate marine inspired design. Typically, the outer walls of her clay forms are raw and unglazed, with the inside finished in a contrasting glossy transparent glaze.

Jess Florence is a ceramicist based in South East London, who uses a variety of methods and techniques to produce small collections and one-off decorative pieces. Originally trained in Graphic Design and Illustration, she began exploring the medium of clay in 2021. The following year she attended Morley College London's Ceramic HNC. Jess now works independently from her studio and is one of the makers at Grove Vale Ceramics.
