cambridge contemporary art

Jiro Ametani

“I am most interested in how we carry the tradition from one generation to another and express knowledge and emotion through objects made of one of the most sustainable materials - clay. To use a traditional coiling technique to represent an inheritance of the ancient art practice and hand-build to create imperfect organic shapes and textures that bring an idea of Japanese aesthetic - wabi-sabi. I invite people to identify how the combination of sustainable materials and traditional art behaviour affects our lives and to consider what elements in life we require to carry on to the next generation as human beings. The coil-building method changed my creative approach from slip-casting when I had an opportunity to explore different techniques in clay during lockdown circumstances. It fascinates me with the construction process and its minimalistic work environment.

My current work is to expand a range of materials and shapes to adopt a combination for following the wabi-sabi approach, however, I investigate adding colours to it except using colourants or glazes. In the end, I wish people to feel the nature of my objects as a result of my clay journey.”
