Karen Keogh

Karen Keogh studied at Roehampton University and Morley College, London. She is a painter and a printmaker.

Karen was elected an Associate Member of the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers in 2008. In 2011 she became a full member (RE). Her work is held in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford; the University of Aberystwyth Print Collection; and the Fitzwilliam Museum Collection, Cambridge. Karen lives and works in London.

Karen has been painting in Watercolours for as long as she can remember, whilst also working as a printmaker. She enjoys painting en plein air. For the last 15 years, she has spent time in Corbieres, France. She loves to walk into the surrounding hills with her paints and attempts to capture the world around her; sometimes working these sketches into more detailed watercolour paintings when she returns to her studio. Karen is interested in identifying patterns within the landscape; in particular, she enjoys finding unusual tree shapes to add detail and intrigue to the image.

Karen's work consists of vibrantly coloured, 3 plate etchings and painterly monotypes, which take the landscape for inspiration. She enjoys simplifying shapes and finding pattern within the landscape. She also likes to add her own touch of wild shape and colour. Using three metal plates for each print is labour intensive, technically difficult, and requires a great deal of foresight. But for Karen, there is no other way to achieve the exciting hues and colour combinations she is looking for.

To Karen, colour is the most thrilling element of the printmaking process. It has remained her passion from her early days of making a print. Sometimes she uses colour independently of the subject, generating light and space by colour alone.
