Rowena Brown

Rowena Brown is a ceramic artist best known for her sculptures of abandoned architectural forms. The sculptures are constructed out of a heavily pigmented black clay and the surfaces decorated with multiple layers of slips and glazes then earthenware fired.

“I was drawn initially to the motif of the building, abandoned following environmental or manmade disaster, as a vessel for reminiscence, an object implying a human presence by its absence. Over time these buildings have become more archetypal and have emerged as powerful symbols of self as I explore themes of self, isolation and community”.

The sculptures are frequently shown in groups or sets, - the placing of the individual pieces in each group in relation to one another reinforces this narrative.
